Elementary School at WSPB | Grades 1-4
In Grades 1 through 4, children are in the heart of what Waldorf educators call the second phase of development a time when imagination, story, and artistic experience are the most powerful doorways into learning. At our Lower School Campus in Boca Raton, academic subjects are taught not as isolated facts but as living, meaningful experiences.
A signature feature of our elementary program is the long-term teacher-student relationship. At WSPB, a class teacher typically stays with the same class for up to eight years — building the kind of deep, trusting relationship that allows each child to be genuinely known throughout their entire elementary journey.
For families across Palm Beach County looking for a private elementary school that goes beyond the conventional, this relationship is often what sets WSPB apart.
Daily life in Grades 1-4 includes main lesson blocks, music, movement, painting, drawing, handwork, and seasonal festivals that connect students to the rhythms of the natural world. Academic subjects including reading, writing, mathematics, nature studies, and world languages are taught through story, imagery, and hands-on making. Core subjects include English, mathematics, science, social studies, woodwork, and knitting. Students begin learning both German and Spanish from Grade 1, taught through song, movement, and story before formal instruction begins.
What Makes Our Approach Different
Waldorf Middle School at WSPB | Grades 5-8
Grades 5 through 8 mark a significant deepening at Waldorf School of Palm Beach. Students at this stage are entering early adolescence, and our curriculum responds directly to that shift. Academic work grows more rigorous and complex. Artistic engagement expands. And students begin to develop the capacity for more independent thinking and self-direction.
Our Waldorf middle school program is housed at the Upper School Campus at 414 NW 35th Street in Boca Raton, giving Grades 5-8 students a dedicated environment designed for this stage of development. Subjects covered across Grades 5-8 include ancient civilizations, world history, algebra, geometry, botany, zoology, physics, and chemistry, all taught through main lesson blocks that invite genuine engagement and original work.
The arts remain fully integrated throughout middle school. Students participate in orchestra, choir, drama productions, painting, sculpting, woodworking, and eurythmy. Handwork evolves from simple knitting into more complex crafts including bookbinding and sewing. These are not electives or enrichment activities. They are core parts of the Waldorf curriculum, developing creativity, precision, and perseverance alongside the academic program.
This is also the stage when students begin to form the social and ethical foundations that will carry them into high school and beyond. Community, responsibility, and service are woven into middle school life at WSPB.
While academic expectations grow significantly in Grades 5 through 8, the work is done within a warm and respectful community that holds space for the real experience of early adolescence. Students develop the ability to think creatively, feel empathically, and work actively — building the confidence and character they will carry into high school and beyond.
A Deeper Approach to Middle School Education
What Makes WSPB Different from Other Private Schools in Palm Beach County
Parents exploring private school options in Palm Beach County often ask what sets Waldorf education apart from other independent schools. The differences are real and significant.
At most traditional private schools, the arts are enrichment. At WSPB, they are the methodology. Every academic subject is approached through an artistic lens because we understand that imagination and creativity are not separate from intellectual development. They are how children at this age actually learn best.
There are no standardized tests in the early and middle grades at WSPB. Instead, teachers use narrative assessments and direct observation to track each child's growth across the full range of their development. This removes the pressure of high-stakes testing while creating a much richer and more accurate picture of who each child is becoming.
Small class sizes mean that every student at WSPB is genuinely known by their teacher. Combined with our long-term teacher-student relationships, this creates a learning environment built on trust, consistency, and deep mutual understanding.
For Palm Beach County families looking for an alternative to traditional education that still delivers strong academic preparation, WSPB's Grades 1-8 program offers something rare: a proven approach that honors both the child and the subject.
